Where does Biomedical Services Ltd draw the line and who would check other appliances such as a toaster in the staff kitchen, computers/printers, TV's. Can you please advise us?

Biomedical Services NZ checks the medical devices used in patient care and patient treatment areas. We ensure that the health care provider will comply with AS/NZS 3551:2004 (Technical management programs for medical devices), which is mandatory under electricity regulations. For your information under the Standard (AS/NZS 3551:2004) a medical device is defined as: "Any instrument, apparatus or appliance, including software, whether used alone or in combination, together with any accessories necessary for correct operation, which makes physical or electrical contact with the patient, or transfers energy to or from the patient, or detects such energy transfer to or from the patient, or is intended to diagnose, treat or monitor the patient."

Other electrical devices such as toasters etc are tested to a different Standard. AS/NZS 3760:2003 (In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment). These are usually tested by electricians rather than professional biomedical technicians.
